THE ART OF RHETORIC – A PATH TO INNER FREEDOM

How did it happen that the art of rhetoric, one of humanity’s oldest and most meaningful arts, is today often understood merely as public speaking? We have lost the depth of rhetoric, the poetry of life, the power of words, self-confidence, and belief in our own potential.

Are rhetoric and public speaking the same? Perhaps not. Imagine an iceberg: above the water, we see only a small part – that is public speaking. But the larger, hidden part lies beneath the surface – preparation, practice, techniques, discoveries, and lessons learned. This “invisible” part is often lost, which is why we frequently float on the surface, settling for “fast food” instead of “gourmet meals.” Public speaking is important, but it is only the tip of the iceberg. Rhetoric is far broader and deeper.

Why rhetoric is an art and a path to inner freedom

The seven liberal arts (Artes Liberales), with rhetoric as their pinnacle. “In the beginning was the word…” – and it can open the door to inner freedom.

  • The art of persuasive speaking – a conscious choice of words, intonations, and topics to influence the audience and leave an impression.

  • Self-knowledge through speech – preparing to speak or addressing an audience helps us discover our strengths, courage, fears, and areas for improvement. As the ancient Greeks said: “Speak until you know yourself.”

  • The power of the word – every spoken word creates an energetic field. Today, our abundance of words often becomes noise, but by using words consciously, we can not only understand ourselves but also create a positive environment.

  • The seven “E” elements – erudition, ethics, etiquette, energy, aesthetics, emotion, empathy. This is a high inner culture that creates true value in the art of rhetoric.

  • Inner freedom – rhetoric is the art of free people. When a person is free inside, words flow naturally, and listening to them is enjoyable, trustworthy, and inspiring.
