“What would the world be like if we spoke persuasively to people who listened to us consciously? It would be a perfect world.” — Julian Treasure
Rhetoric. One of humanity’s oldest arts. To this day, it is perhaps one of the least explored fields of knowledge and art. We often think of rhetoric or public speaking (although they are not quite the same thing, as public speaking is only one visible—or public—part of the broader art of rhetoric) as a way of persuading others, manipulating an audience, or selling a product or service more effectively. These elements certainly exist within rhetoric, but they are only the tip of the iceberg…
So, what lies beneath the surface? Where does the true essence of the art of rhetoric lie?
Rhetoric is one of the three classical liberal arts, alongside grammar and dialectic. It is the Art of Speaking. We learn to meditate, to breathe, to be silent, to eat… and we call these conscious practices. Yet we often overlook the phenomenon of speech—the very ability that distinguishes us from all other living beings – as something ordinary and self-evident. And yet rhetoric – the art and study of speaking – is Conscious Speaking.
When I study rhetoric, I am not simply learning how to speak, how to speak in front of an audience, or how to persuasively defend my arguments. I am learning to relax. I become aware of what I fear and what I want. I learn to stand up for my beliefs, my truth, and my perspective. I learn to be in the Pause. By studying rhetoric, I learn to know myself. As the ancient Greeks said, “Speak, until you know yourself.” Rhetoric is Conscious Speaking – a form of speaking fundamentally different from the everyday, unconscious way of communicating to which we have become accustomed.

Rhetoric is the art of free people. What do I mean by “free people”? I mean the art of people who are confident in themselves and believe in themselves. It is the art of people who are free from fears, insecurities, and limiting beliefs. When a person is free within, when they trust themselves, when they believe in themselves… words begin to flow freely. Human beings alone possess language. We can speak, choose different words, arrange them one after another, and create extraordinary sentences. This is how stories emerge. This is how new worlds are created.
And when a person is free, they can create masterpieces of speech. Then they will be heard and understood. Others will want to listen to them and be around them. When a person is free within, that is when Art begins. The Art of Speaking. The art of being heard and understood. This is Rhetoric—the art of free people.
Moreover, rhetoric is a skill that can be developed. And I want to repeat this: EVERYONE can do it.
